  Inspiration:   This is the third in a series of three mixed media pieces inspired by the magnificent masks and costumes from Carnival and Marti Gras. Description : This Magical Masquerade mixed media piece started with the shadowbox and the head piece. I planned the layout of the background elements using wood laser cut scraps, beautiful lace, mechanical gears and metal butterflies. I then stenciled the background using soft gloss gel followed by adhering fine lace, gears, mechanicals, and flower elements with heavy body gel. Heavy white gesso was used to seal all the background elements. Acrylic paints were used to paint the face piece! I blended metallic colors of burgundy, purples and blues for the top and the base. Splatter paint was added to the box top and bottom pieces using various colors of acrylic paint. Furniture good caps were added to the bottom to protect the finish. Metallique waxes were used to give more dimension to the background elements and mask. ...

I planned the layout of the background elements using wood gear scraps, chipboard gears, mechanical gears and metal butterflies. I then stenciled the background using soft gloss gel followed by adhering fine lace, gears, mechanicals, and flower elements with heavy body gel. Heavy white gesso was used to seal all the background elements. Acrylic paints were used to paint the face piece! I blended colors of purples and blues on the base. Splatter paint was added to the box top and bottom pieces using various colors of acrylic paint. Description : This Mysterious Masquerade mixed media piece started with the shadowbox and the head piece. I planned the layout of the background elements using wood gear scraps, chipboard gears, mechanical gears and metal butterflies. I then stenciled the background using soft gloss gel followed by adhering the gears, leaves and flower elements with heavy body gel. Heavy white gesso was used to seal all the background elements. Acrylic paints were used to paint the face piece with various tones of black, red and white. My wife Nanci helped with her steady hand to paint the gold mask outline details! Crackle was used on the white elements of the face. The checkered pattern was repeated on all four sides with hand painting.
