Mysterious Masquerade

Inspiration: I was inspired by the magnificent masks and costumes from Carnival and Marti Gras. This is the first of three mixed media masquerade pieces.

Description:

This Mysterious Masquerade mixed media piece started with the shadowbox and the head piece. I planned the layout of the background elements using wood gear scraps, chipboard gears, mechanical gears and metal butterflies. I then stenciled the background using soft gloss gel followed by adhering the gears, leaves and flower elements with heavy body gel. Heavy white gesso was used to seal all the background elements. Acrylic paints were used to paint the face piece with various tones of black, red and white. My wife Nanci helped with her steady hand to paint the gold mask outline details!

Crackle was used on the white elements of the face. The checkered pattern was repeated on all four sides with hand painting. Splatter paint was added to the shadowbox using various colors of acrylic paint. Furniture good caps were added to the bottom to protect the finish. Metallique waxes were used to give more dimension to the background elements and mask.

Finally, gold cord and ribbon, red and gold bling, and carnival beads were used on the mask elements. The final piece measures 12” x 8” x 3.5”.

Magical Mystical Mermaid

Inspiration: I found a mermaid wall hanging at a garage sale and an old project canvas that I put together to upscale them both into an undersea scene. I was very excited at how it turned out. I hope this inspires you to create something fun!  Description : I coated the canvas with wood pieces and painted it with shades of blue and purple. For the background, I used real large sea stars, large seashells, chipboard gears and resin shaped all layered to give it depth. I added Finnabair Firebird Art Alchemy Metallique Wax to the deep blue background to give it a vibrant look. T he metal mermaid was painted in lighter blue-green sea colors. I decorated the mermaid’s hair with beaded necklaces and mini pearls. I decorated the body with chipboard gears, small seashells, small resin shapes, pearls, and mechanicals.   Inspiration: I was inspired by the Stamperia Sir Vagabond in Scrapbooking by Antonis Tzanidakis and a collection of oriental mixed media items. I was very excited at how it turned out.
