Steampunk Altered Brushes

Image
Inspiration: My wife and I attended Stamp and Scrapbook Expo in Chicago where we made a mixed media paint brush…pink and white were the colors provided in the class. While it turned out nice, I wanted to re-work it and make it more my style. Thank you to my wonderful wife Nanci Wolter-Duigou for many helpful suggestions. I was very excited at how it turned out! (Much better than pink ). I hope this inspires you to create something fun! Description : We found a wood frame at a garage sale and combined it with additional used brushes for more elements in the composition and to add depth. On the backside of the frame, I added black card stock embossed with gears and applied guilder’s wax and wax paste on it to pull out the highlights. I then stacked various mechanical elements, gears, and small thin brushes to give the background more dimension. Around the frame, I added two brushes and additional gears. The entire frame was coated in Clear Crackle Texture Paste to give it a lovely,...

Fantastic Frank, the Dapper Steampunk Frankenstein

Image
Inspiration: We found a Styrofoam Frankenstein head at the local store, so of course I wanted to steampunk him all out! My daughter found a jaunty little hat that was perfect for the steampunk theme giving him a man-about-town vibe. T hank you to my wonderful wife Nanci f or so many wonderful suggestions to help Frank become truly fantastic! I was very excited at how it turned out - fun and spooky!!! I hope this inspires you to create something fun! Description : To ensure the piece was sturdy, I mounted it to a wood base and drilled out a hole for a thick dowel rod that went up into the Styrofoam head and glued into place. Next, I covered Frank’s head with gesso and a green paint base color. I then created gears, “metal plates” and mechanical elements in Adobe Illustrator and cut out the shapes on chipboard in our Glowforge Pro.  Next, drilled a hole in the wood base to run the mini-lights up through. I applied green LED lights in specific areas of the face hiding the cord wit...

Sir Vagabond Discover Flight Book

Image
Inspiration: As part of La-La Land Crafts Virtual Craft Retreat, a chipboard book was one of the projects. Since my wife and I were both making the same things with duplicate kits, I decided to change the theme to use some of my Stamperia Sir Vagabond Aviator papers and elements and a bit of steampunk flair. With some helpful suggestions from Nanci Wolter-Duigou , I was very excited at how it turned out. I hope this inspires you to create something fun! Description : I started with a chipboard book. The project used paper towel (kitchen roll), separated the layered pieces, and applied it to the book with Mod Podge while bunching it to look like an old rough covered book. I painted it with dark brown, medium brown, and light tan acrylic paint to give it a leathery appearance. The project had us cover the book “page” area with a medium and use toothpicks to create pages effect. I used 3D Matte Gel for this. My wife had an idea to paint the pages gold like an old, gilded look. I used a...

Spooky Witch Hat Mountain

Image
Inspiration: I found this paper Mache witch hat and thought of bringing all kinds of fun items in our stash to create this unique fun and spooky piece. I hope this inspires you to create something fun! 😊 Description : Halloween shapes were cut on our Glowforge laser cutter on chipboard from vector art created in Adobe Illustrator. These pieces were glued them along with a host of other Halloween inspired chipboards, ephemera, and other items. I coated everything in Black Heavy Gesso and wove the mini-LED lights throughout. I then added three-dimensional items including a miniature weathervane that I twisted and wrapped bones with wire onto it. Black Sand Texture Paste was then added all over the brim of the hat to pull the piece together. Then applied liquid acrylics and acrylic paint in hues of blues and purple to give it a gothic nighttime feel. Waxes and acrylic paints were added to highlight the three-dimensional textures and details. It was finished by adding acrylic paint spla...
