Camp Stampaway 2023 Costume Contest Winners!

Inspiration: Each year, the Stampaway conference in Cincinnati has a theme – for 2023, it was summer camp. My wife Nanci had this wonderful vision of creating a two-person canoe as a costume. Not just that, she wanted to create custom shirts and hats. The canoe would also feature fish hanging off the bottom and we would be wearing water-patterned leggings to give the illusion that you were seeing under the water. All the colors would match the Camp Stampaway logo. So much fun!😊

Description:

Shirts & Hats: We found brown T-shirts and matching baseball hats. We printed the Camp Stampaway logo on fabric transfers and adhered them to the front of the shirt with smaller logos on the sleeves and hats. We had our first names in orange type adhered to the backs of the shirts as well.

Canoe, Storage, Straps, & Oars: Built the canoe frame out of PVC pipe with two cross braces to attach shoulder straps to and the end attached together. We then re-used shipping boxes to create the canoe body adhered with glue sticks…lots of them. Nanci also had a wonderful idea to use the front and rear part of the boat to store things we purchased at the convention, so shelves were created, and openings left facing inward. Once the frame was completed, we spray painted the entire piece with a green base color.

Nanci found strap material that we wound around the two canoe support beams that looped over our shoulders to hold the canoe allowing our arms to be free to “paddle” and we walked along. 😊

We then used acrylic paints in several shades of green to give the boat a wooden look. We created canoe oars with PVC pipe and cardboard as well and painted them orange (colors in the Camp Stampaway logo).

Underwater Fish & Leggings: We found various shapes and sizes of fish and attached them to the bottom of the canoe at various lengths. We purchased water patterned leggings to give the illusion of being underwater as a fun touch. 😊 Finally, we found a child’s fishing pole, removed stickers and matched the colors in the logo as well. We kept a few fish loose to toss out to the crowd as we walked through the convention center. 😊

The piece measures 101” in length x 27” wide x 12" tall.
